The startling conclusion to the Silver Fae Games Series, A Kingdom of Shadows & Blood is LIVE!
Hello Loves,
I wanted to email last week but there was a technical difficulty... my mouse died. Not a real mouse, my computer mouse, and I had to wait for Amazon to deliver me a new one, but now, I've got a new techie mouse and I'm raring to go.
But a dead mouse wasn't my only wrinkle dinkle. I mean, what else would I expect in 2022. If you preordered A Kingdom of Shadows and Blood: Silver Fae Games Book 3, you received an email Sunday night telling you the preorder was cancelled. It was and it wasn't. First, I uploaded the wrong version to Amazon Wednesday and was locked out. I spent four days arguing with Amazon about locking me out and begging them to allow me to upload the correct version, but Amazon wouldn't budge. Rather than a poor reading experience and pissing you off, I cancelled the preorder link and created a new one.
And you can grab your copy! Plus, I've got a luscious sample chapter for you. There are some spoilers because so many things happen in the book. Twists, turns, and surprises. So many surprises!
Author friend LB Carter also released the 3rd book of her series. So keep reading for all the good things.

SNEAK PEEK CHAPTER: A Kingdom of Shadows & Blood: Silver Fae Games Book 3
Chapter 5
Starr
I searched for shame within my mind as we approached the volcano, but I couldn’t find any. It didn’t matter that our friends almost witnessed us sealing the mate bond. I wanted Christian forever. We’d waited long enough. We needed each other, and it was only once the mate bond was complete we’d reach our next level of connection.
There was also another reason I wanted it so badly—And I’d never admit into anyone, not even Christian. The void inside me scared me. When the darkness overtook me, I was capable of killing the one I loved most in the world. If we sealed our mate bond, Christian’s light would fill the void and darkness would no longer rule within me. I fought to always find the light in my life, but lately, the pull of darkness was stronger. Di claimed we all held light and darkness within us and that we needed to embrace it. But no good would come of me giving into mine. Killing Christian after he took the Third Artifact proved that, and I’d do whatever it took to avoid making a mistake I can’t reverse.
The fire from the volcano heated my already fiery core. It didn’t make it any easier to be close to Christian and not be able to do anything about it.
“Anyone else feel like their eyeballs are melting?” Jovie rubbed at her eyes.
I snorted. It was hot as hell, and as we got closer to the volcano, it would only get hotter.
My wings fluttered behind me. Since they re-sprouted, they refused to fold into my back and hide beneath my shirt.
“Anyone see a trail or are we climbing?” Ben asked.
I raised a single hand careful not to draw forth Awen light. “I could fly up?”
Christian rolled his eyes. “We already discussed you won’t be flying in or around this volcano. No one will.”
“That I agree with,” Sir Kenneth said on the other side of me. “Though perhaps Nagel could scout?”
Nagel studied the volcano perhaps assessing if he could in fact fly around it and investigate. His dragon wings were three times the size from when I first regrew them. The thick leathery membrane was far more fireproof that Sir Kenneth and my Silver Fae wings. “Already did.” He pointed to a small red tunnel halfway up the mountain.
“Why is it always caves in these Games?” Coda groaned.
“The first Game Master wanted to contain the Games as much as possible so prisoners couldn’t fly away given the opportunity. The pocket dimension provides a high level of protection from potential flight risks, but he wanted to eliminate any loopholes,” Nagel said.
“Except the one my grandmother created,” I muttered.
“Yes, he didn’t foresee that one.”
Di stepped toward the dragon shapeshifter. The rest of the team trusted Nagel, but they were still a little weary of him. Di, however, was not. “You say prisoners as in more than one. How many prisoners are forced to compete in the Games?”
“Aside from all of you?”
She cocked her hip to the side. “Obviously, aside from us and you.”
Nagel’s nostrils flared in and out watching her. They stood in long silence not saying a word.
“All the participants are prisoners, aren’t they?” She said, answering her own question.
“Some volunteer, but most are forced to take part.”
She narrowed her eyes at him as if she was trying to read his mind. “How large is Silverlain Dungeon?”
He shook his head. “Not all prisoners live in a cage beneath the castle. Sir Kenneth, do you care to enlighten our friends?”
The Captain of the Shadow Knights adjusted his scabbard, uncomfortable with the turn of the conversation.
I stared at the man who was once my father’s best friend. A man who knew my mother. A man I trusted. “Sir Kenneth?”
His chest rose and fell as he took a deep breath in and out. “Anyone who opposes the Silverlains, specifically Queen Evelyn is put to death.”
Disturbing yes, but not surprising. I sensed there was far more he wasn’t telling me. “And…”
“They force the offspring to enter the Games as punishment for their parents’ sins.” He pressed his lips together.
Nagel grunted. “Tell them the rest.”
Sir Kenneth started pacing. “They are raised on compounds. Squeezed into tight living quarters with barely enough room to lie down to sleep at night. Provided just enough food to survive until the Games where they are forced to serve as entertainment for Queen Evelyn and her ‘loyal’ subjects.”
Tears streamed down my cheeks. “Why don’t they join and rise up against her?”
“Anyone caught talking to another prisoner is punished and put into solitary confinement until the next Games or…” He stopped unable or unwilling to continue.
“Or what Sir Kenneth? Tell them,” Nagel growled.
“Or they die of starvation. Then their body is put back in the living quarters to serve as a reminder of what happens to anyone who breaks the rules.”
“That’s horrible,” Jovie cried. Coda wrapped his arm around her shoulders and patted her back.
“It is,” Sir Kenneth whispered, sadness emanating from him and wrapping around all of us.
“Tell them what the first detail is for a newly appointed Shadow Knight.”
“Overseeing the compounds,” Sir Kenneth whispered.
“So your precious knight sent Innocent victims to their death for the mere crime of communicating with another living being,” Nagel growled.
“How could you?” I snapped at him. “How could you witness those crimes and do nothing?”
“It’s not that simple.”
Magick flared inside of me. “It is that simple.” Then the thread of a truth came to me. “Did my dad guard them too?”
“Yes.” His voice broke over the confession.
Pieces of the intricate puzzle clicked into place. I staggered backward clutching my chest. “My mom was a prisoner there, wasn’t she?”
“Yes.”
“But you told me you knew her.”
His eyes slid over to Nagel. The dragon shapeshifters’ eyes narrowed as he watched Sir Kenneth. “It’s complicated,” he finally said.
Rage replaced the hurt. “It. Is. Not. Complicated. There is nothing you can’t say in front me that can’t be said in front of everyone else. We’ve battled together to make it this far. We ALL deserve to know.”
He sighed, staring up at the volcano. Time stood still as I waited for him to continue.
“It was a long time ago.”
“In a galaxy far, far away,” Coda whispered. I shot him a piercing look just as Ben punched him in the arm. Coda’s lips tightened as he dropped his head. This wasn’t the time nor the place for humor. Not when Sir Kenneth was talking about my mom.
“Your father and I had just passed our exams for the Shadow Knight Academy. We knew that guarding the compound would most likely be our first assignment, but we hoped that perhaps your father and I could skip that assignment and begin Captain training.” He scratched his neck beneath his normally clean-shaven chin now sporting a beard. “General Treadwell had other plans.”
“Of course he did.” My heart skipped a beat at the mention of his name. I glanced over my shoulder as if the bastard stood right behind me watching my every move, calculating when he could strike at me again.
Christian slung his arm around me and rubbed my arms as if sensing I needed support. (I did, by the way.) I gave him a tight smile of appreciation. I was too on edge with Sir Kenneth’s story to give any more than that.
“Your dad and I were immediately sent to the compound and assigned the next watch. We’d only heard rumors of the living conditions.”
“Rumors based on fact,” Nagel snarled.
“Yes,” Sir Kenneth said. “The rumors didn’t begin to detail the deplorable state of things at the compound.”
“No, I don’t expect they did especially from pampered Silver Fae boys.”
Sir Kenneth’s chest flared as his hand shot out in front of him his fingers fanned wide. Nagel’s hands reached for his neck his beady eyes growing larger by the millisecond. Sir Kenneth pulled his thumb toward his fingers. Nagel gasped for breath his face darkening. Sir Kenneth was squeezing his windpipe with his extended fingers. I ran between them breaking the magickal connection. “That’s enough.”
Nagel’s chest heaved as he rubbed his throat to soothe it following Sir Kenneth’s attack.
The captain breathed in and out trying to steady himself. “I did not live a pampered Silver Fae life. I didn’t know my parents. I was raised and trained by J’Tia until I was of age to enter the Shadow Knight Academy.”
“You never met your parents?” I whispered, feeling intense sadness for this man whom despite all his flaws had become a second father to me.
“I did not.” His steel grey eyes watered. He blinked and looked away. My own eyes teared up in sympathy. “I’m so sorry.”
Rebecca cleared her throat. “I don’t want you to think that I’m insensitive to your history, but as they say, the clock is ticking.”
He nodded his head, his hairy chin bobbing up and down. “Right. The night of our first shift, we saw your mother.” A lump formed in my throat. Since Treadwell ruined my life, I’d done everything in my power not to think about my mom. I left her behind to protect her from Treadwell and the Organization. It killed me to discover that she was a prisoner at the compound. “True magick happened when we laid eyes on her.”
“Love at first sight?” I glanced over at Christian.
Sir Kenneth frowned as he watched me. “You know now that it is much more significant than that. It is not a passing whim as the Earthly Realm often heralds it. Magickal threads spun by the Goddess herself sprung between us.”
Christian raised three fingers. “Us, as in the three of you?”
Di stomped into the middle of the circle and stood beside Starr. “I’d hate to break up this party especially with this major twist, but we need to get moving.” She pointed at the volcano. Objects were shooting out the top of it and landing around the base.
I squinted. “What are they?”
“Demons,” Nagel hissed as if it were a curse and shot into the air shifting into his dragon. “I’ll hold them off as much as I can.”
The rest of us started running toward the demons.
“Any tips on how to kill them?” Jovie shouted.
“They are lesser demons so fire, blade, teeth. A bite of a wolf is fatal to them as they are to Fae. That is why shapeshifters were extinguished from our realm,” Sir Kenneth shouted brandishing his sword readying for battle.
“Excellent,” Ben yelled shifting into his wolf. Coda followed close behind.
Christian remained in human form.
“What are you doing? Shift.”
He shook his head. “I’m not leaving you unless absolutely necessary.”
“Christian, when are you going to accept that I am not a damsel in distress? I can take care of myself.”
“I know you can, but every time we’re separated something bad happens.”
I pooled fire into my palms. “True, but I’m more than capable.”
“I have a few tricks up my sleeve,” Christian said swinging an open palm toward me so I could see the fire balls he formed.
“So you possess magick now?”
He winked at me. “I guess I do.”
I slowed realizing something. “Does that mean I can shift into a wolf?”
“Better not to worry about that right now. Use the tools you know how to use,” Frank said sweeping past us and lunging at the nearest demon. He swiftly swung onto its back and bit into its neck severing the head from its body. He lifted his blood-covered face to us his fangs dripping black demon blood. “I read that in a book.” He grinned and pounced on the next demon.
Christian and I glanced at each other and nodded as more demons swarmed around us. We swung back our arms and hurled our fireballs at the nearest ones roaring, “Argh!”
